When County Councils were established in 1888, Stockport achieved county borough status. Under the 1832 Reform Act Stockport became a parliamentary borough with two Members of Parliament, and the 1835 Municipal Corporations Act gave the town its first democratically elected Council. The coming of the railway created a line from Manchester to Stockport in 1840, crossing the Mersey valley on a suberb viaduct which was a triumph of Victorian railway engineering and one of the wonders of the railway age. The road from Manchester to Buxton through Stockport was turnpiked in 1724, and by the opening decade of the 19th century Stockport was the hub of a number of turnpikes linking the expanding textile towns of north-east Cheshire. The development of the Stockport region was greatly helped by improvements in transport. It prospered as trades and manufactures developed, and by 1610 'Stoppart cloth' was being sold in London. The small town became a borough in 1260 and was also granted a Market Charter. The records of the Compstall Co-operative Society are also available in the national archive - which covers their branch in Romiley. Robert Hunter also produced a short history of Bredbury and Romiley following his adult education classes in the late 70'sīredbury and Romiley Urban District Council also produced a short history in their guide to the area published in the late 1960's. Leslie Rice produced the Compstall Story in 1984 which naturally focuses on Compstall Sources could include:īill Beard who has 'recently' published two books - a photo and narrative history of Romiley and also of Romiley School - these were for sale in the Carpet Shop at one time! Not sure if this helps - for the Romiley area there are a number of sources but it really depends on what you wish to focus on.
